James E. Corter, President

James Corter, Ph.D., is the founder of Assessment Science.  He holds the position of Professor of Statistics and Education at Columbia University, and has affiliations with the Center for Applied Statistics and the Center for Decision Sciences. He obtained his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1983 under Professor Amos Tversky, one of the founders of the field of behavioral decision theory.
Dr. Corter is an expert on the modeling of consumer behavior, with particular expertise in customer segmentation, the analysis of consumer choice, and financial decision making.  He has published research on multivariate statistics, behavioral decision theory, human categorization, machine learning, and psychometrics.  He is the author of dozens of articles and chapters in scholarly journals, such as the Journal of Classification, Psychometrika, Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, and the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making.  He is the author of a book, Tree Models of Similarity and Association, describing the applications of tree models to behavioral data, including consumer perceptions.  
Dr. Corter has 25 years of experience in consumer modeling and statistical consulting, mainly concentrated in market research applications.  Clients have included GM, Ford, IBM, AT&T wireless, NYNEX, Nabisco, American Express, and a host of smaller companies.  He has also worked as subcontractor on projects with larger research and consulting firms such as McCann Direct, OgilvyOne, Young & Rubicam, Wunderman Worldwide, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and McKinsey & Co.
